In The Shadow of Cotton (2018)
This book refreshes our culture of remembrance with humor and tears through the eyes of a child coming of age among the tide of baby boomers in the Deep South in a cotton mill village in the 1950s and 1960s. This memoir, In The Shadow of Cotton is a throughly engaging, heartwarming, often funny story of play, daily life, and most important love and respect and loyalty in the mill village community. The work includes the life and times of the period and a history of cotton, the cotton mills, and its villages.
After a career in counseling and psychology, I decided to try my hand at writing. I had been an advid reader all of my life and often said that I wanted to write a book or books. And so, I did. The idea for In the Shadow of Cotton came about as I watched the demise of the cotton mills around me and the decline of the cotton mill villages. As I aged, I began to realize what an impact growing up in a mill village had on me. My father still lives in the old mill village house that I grew up in. Most of the neighbors I grew up around have passed away or moved on. It is a bittersweet experience to go back to my old home place. A flood of memories always comes back when I'm there. On the street my father lives on and where I was raised, there is still one old neigbor that is still there. He and his wife are often sitting on the porch and always wave and speak. If I walk over and visit them I rarely leave without receiveing some sort of a gift, like fresh vegetables or fruit that they grew. It reminds me that all of my life if you came to see my parents, you would either be fed are given something to take with you, or both. I am thankful that I grew up in such a caring community.
Forgiveness: Seeking and Receiving been released on Amazon in electronic and print form. Forgiveness is one of God's commandments for Christian living. If we never give forgiveness to others who have hurt us, we will continue to be hurt and this emotion will hamper our relationship with our Lord and others who are in our lives. This guide approaches forgiveness from a biblical as well as a contempory psychological point of view.

I just finished In the Shadow of Cotton, and I loved it! Especially liked all the reminiscences, facts about places, toys, and everyday life around the cotton mill, all John's childhood adventures.
